Sarcoma Cancer Treatment at Specialized Centers

What is Sarcoma Cancer

Cancer begins when healthy cells change and grow out of control, forming a mass called a tumor or lesion. Sarcomas are rare, aggressive, and often misdiagnosed cancers that develop from bones or soft tissues. Soft tissues include muscle, fat, blood vessels, nerves, tendons and the lining of the joints. There are over 100 sub-types, and are found in both adults and children. Treatment for sarcoma varies depending on sarcoma type, where it is located, and other factors.

Sarcoma is often called the "forgotten cancer" because it is a rare, making it less well-known and less frequently researched compared to more common cancers. This rarity leads to lower public awareness and less funding for research and treatment development, hindering progress in understanding and combating the disease.

Criteria to identify a recognized sarcoma center

Because sarcomas are rare, for the best outcomes and chance of survival, it is important to be treated at sarcoma centers, by doctors who have experience with this disease.

Sarcoma centers should have

  • A sarcoma medical team that includes all specialties: hematology, surgical, orthopedic and medical oncologists; radiologists; pathologists; physician assistants, and oncology nursing as well as rehabilitation services
  • At least one member who belongs to a sarcoma-oriented medical organization, such as the Connective Tissue Oncology Society (CTOS)
  • Active contributions to peer-reviewed journals through sarcoma-related research publications
  • Sarcoma conferences (e.g. Tumor Board), where sarcoma group members meet at least once per month to discuss patient care issues
  • At least 50 sarcoma patients seen annually
  • MRI imaging available; PET scans desired
  • Participation in clinical trials
  • Strong support personnel such as social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists
  • Sarcoma support group desired
